SOLOS | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

PHOENIX FESTIVAL OF DANCE SOLO REGISTRATION

Registrations have opened for Phoenix Festival of Dance 2023. It is the responsibility of all parents to register their child's solos for this festival BEFORE Saturday 29th April.

The registration process is via Stardom (same for majority of dance competitions). Please click the link and follow the instructions below.

Solo entry instructions

The entry portal is now open via Stardom and you will need to follow this process:

  1. Login or register your details on the Stardom platform
  2. Click 'create new entry' and search for '21st Annual Phoenix Festival of Dance Inc (Frankston, VIC)'
  3. Click 'start entry' next to 21st Annual Phoenix Festival of Dance Inc (Frankston, VIC)
  4. Click the + button next to 'Dancing' to find the relevant solo category or categories
    • Note: Age is taken from 1 Jan 2023 (e.g. If your child is 11 years old now, but was 10 years old at the beginning of the year, then they are classified as 10 years old for the comp)
    • Enter Novice if your child has never placed a medal (1st, 2nd or 3rd) in that style of dance. It doesn't matter if they placed in a different style.
    • Enter Open if your child HAS placed (1st, 2nd or 3rd) in that style of dance in any competition.
  5. Tick the relevant categories and click 'next'
    • Phoenix Festival also has Shining Star categories for novice dancers. If your dancer has not performed that style of dance before they can also enter in the Shining Star category as an extra opportunity to perform their solo.
      • Classical category is: Classical, Neo Classical, Contemporary and Lyrical solos.
      • Theatrical category is: Jazz, Song & Dance and Tap solos.
      • In the spirit of supporting true Novice dancers it is recommended that no dancers who are performing in a Championship or Award section enter the Shining Star category.
  6. Add your child to the relevant solo category and click 'next'
    • If you have not entered solos before you will need to add your child and their age details to the platform. This is then saved for later competitions.
  7. Add 'Joanne O'Kelly School of Dance' as the school to each category and Joanne O'Kelly as the teacher for ALL dances regardless of who your teacher is, then click 'next'
  8. Extras
    • Competitor passes: These are required for all participants and allow dancers in to watch any of the performances throughout the festival.
    • Program: This is a great source of information providing all the details and time slots for every troupe and solo. An essential competition companion. It is recommended to purchase this when you enter so that you can prepare for the event.

OPEN OR NOVICE?

Any Competitor placed 1st or 2nd or 3rd in any competition must dance in OPEN section. If your child has not placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any competition then they are in the NOVICE section.

PLEASE NOTE: This rule still applies even if your child moves up to the next age category. If they have placed in ANY previous competition they MUST enter the OPEN section, regardless if they move up to a new age category.

Still have questions?

As you can imagine Miss Jo and the teachers are all very busy at the moment preparing everything for Phoenix comp. We ask that you please refrain from messaging with quick questions as it does take a lot of time to respond. If you still have any questions after reading through the above, please feel free to pop into the studio and ask Zan as she will be able to help you.

Solo rehearsals

Please make sure for every rehearsal you:

  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early to warm up
  • Arrive dressed and ready
  • Have the correct attire for the genre of dance
  • Bring a USB so your teacher can upload your music
  • Bring a device (ipad or phone) to record your solo for practicing
  • Rehearse your solos in between sessions

The confirmed weekly solo timetable can be found here.

Solo costumes

All families should start preparing themselves for solo costumes as it is your responsibility to organise your own costumes. Please download and read the solo costume information document in full and contact Sharon Rush if you have any specific questions.

Props for solos

All props will be required to bring on the day of the solo and taken through to backstage before the section.

Some shared props such as tables and chairs that are used for multiple solos can remain at the theatre backstage for JOKSOD dancers. It is the responsibility of the dancer to make sure all props are there and ready for their solo performance on the day.

SOLO MUSIC

This year music will be digital upload and more details on how to do this will be released soon.

All dancers should also carry a USB with the music at the competition as a back up.
