WHY DRESS REHEARSALS

Dress rehearsals are a vital part of preparing for our end-of-year concert, ensuring students are well-prepared for the final performance. Our students have been preparing ALL year for this end of year concert and to ensure they have the BEST experience possible it is really important to attend dress rehearsals:

  • Familiarisation with costumes and props: Dancers get accustomed to performing in their costumes, helping them adjust to any restrictions or weight from the attire or props. It also allows teachers to assess if any costume adjustments are needed for comfort or safety.
  • Orientation and spatial awareness: Performing in preparation for the stage dancers learn to navigate a larger space, manage entrances and exits, and understand stage cues for spacing and formations.
  • Lighting and sound coordination: Dress rehearsals are essential for testing lighting and sound cues with the choreography. Dancers experience changes in lighting, and sound operators can match music to movements accurately.
  • Building confidence: A full run-through in dress helps dancers gain confidence, especially younger or less-experienced performers. This reduces nervousness and familiarises them with the performance atmosphere.
  • Teamwork and synchronisation: Dancers perform as a cohesive group, enhancing timing and coordination within their ensemble, which is especially crucial in group numbers.
  • Identifying and correcting mistakes: A dress rehearsal acts as a trial run, allowing teachers and dancers to spot any issues in choreography, staging, or costume and make adjustments before the final performance.
  • Practicing full routines with stamina: Dress rehearsals provide an opportunity for dancers to perform full routines back-to-back, building stamina and allowing them to experience the physical demands of the concert.
  • Reinforcing stage etiquette and cues: Dancers learn essential stage rules, including entering and exiting quietly, waiting in the wings, and adhering to the show’s flow, which contributes to a smooth and professional performance.
  • Encouraging focus and discipline: Dress rehearsals promote a disciplined environment where dancers must focus on timing, listening to cues, and following directions.
  • Boosting morale and reducing anxiety: A full rehearsal brings the excitement of the performance, allowing dancers to feel prepared and reducing anxiety about the final show.
  • Preparing for audience reactions: Dancers experience how to remain focused and composed, even with potential audience distractions, ensuring they are ready for a live performance.
  • Class presentations and photos: After the pre-school and beginner dress rehearsals we have a special presentation and photo opportunity with the class. This is a lovely opportunity to get a group photo and for your child to be recognised for all the hard work they have put into preparing for this point.

By ensuring all these elements are aligned, a dress rehearsal enhances the overall quality of the performance and creates a more polished and professional end-of-year concert experience for dancers, teachers, and the audience alike.

COSTUME QUICK CHANGES

Unfortunately as we don't have as many helpers available we are requiring our older dancers to please make sure you take responsibility and BE ORGANISED for all your changes.

Tips for costume changes

  • Organisation is key - put together a list of all your dances and costume requirements BEFORE the concert and run through in your head
  • Do practice changes for anything particularly quick
  • Layer tights where possible for ease of changing
  • Preparation is key in setting your costumes in order of when you need them and putting the corresponding tights and shoes ready where possible
  • Ask your friends who may not have a quick change to help you!
  • DON'T forget to pick up the costume you've take OFF and put bag in your costume bag so that you don't LOSE anything!

We have a few dancers that will need to change side stage with no dances inbetween and for this we have teachers ready to help you! After you have finished your quick change it is SO important that you go back and pick up your costume and take it back to your dressing room.

WE DO NOT HAVE PEOPLE HELPING TO PICK UP AFTER ALL THE DANCERS. YOUR COSTUMES ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Please can everyone remind all dancers that if they are not dancing to keep alert and helpful to ANYONE who may need some extra help. Many hands make light work and the only way we will get through this is with some teamwork and support of each other!
