The Joy of Dance Competitions: 6 Reasons Why We Love Them at JOKSOD

The world of competition dance sometimes gets an unfair reputation, often fuelled by the high-drama portrayals on reality TV. But at Joanne O’Kelly School of Dance (JOKSOD), we see a very different side, one that’s deeply positive, empowering and profoundly rewarding for our students.

We choose to take part in just two carefully selected competitions each year, both known for being beautifully organised, supportive events. Far from being about trophies or rivalry, our aim is to nurture our students’ love of dance and performing in a healthy, happy environment.

Here’s why we truly value the competition experience for our dancers:

1. Developing real stage experience

At its heart, dance is an art meant to be shared. Competitions offer an invaluable chance for our students to perform beyond the end-of-year concert. Every moment on stage builds confidence, polish and artistry. Performing in front of new audiences and adjudicators also helps dancers grow comfortable under pressure, an experience that serves them well, whether they stay in the arts or pursue other creative paths.

2. Learning the power of teamwork

Most of our competition dancers participate in age-group troupes. Working together to bring choreography to life fosters responsibility, patience and cooperation, similar to what’s learned in team sports. Students discover first-hand how individual effort contributes to the success of the group, building character and camaraderie along the way.

3. Fueling creativity and stagecraft

Fresh choreography keeps young dancers creatively engaged and open-minded. Beyond the classroom, many students go home and create their own routines, something we absolutely love to hear about. In a digital age where passive consumption is easy, dance competitions encourage active creativity, imagination and original thinking.

4. Building resilience and healthy perspective

Competition naturally introduces children to the concept that effort doesn’t always guarantee a prize—and that’s okay. At JOKSOD, we never focus on ribbons or titles. Instead, we talk about commitment, progress and celebrating the journey. When students do receive recognition, we celebrate; when they don’t, we see it as an opportunity to reflect, learn and keep growing. These moments help develop resilience and balance, lessons that go far beyond dance.

5. Creating strong, lasting friendships

The shared excitement backstage, the cheers during performances and the pride in each other’s achievements forge bonds that often last a lifetime. Whether students dance in solos, duos or troupes, they learn to support and uplift one another, something that truly shines in our JOKSOD community spirit.

6. Embracing constructive feedback

Adjudicators’ comments give dancers fresh, professional insights into their technique and artistry. We encourage students to listen with open minds, using feedback as a tool to refine their dancing. It’s an important step towards lifelong learning and self-improvement.

How parents can support dancers through competitions

At JOKSOD, there’s no pressure for students to compete; it’s always a choice, and participation is about growth, not perfection. What matters most is dedication in rehearsals, genuine enjoyment and trying their best on the day.

It’s natural for students to feel disappointed sometimes. We openly discuss that dance, as an art form, is subjective and adjudicators each see performances differently. Setbacks are part of every dancer’s journey, but resilience is built by turning disappointment into motivation to keep improving.

Above all, we’re proud of every student who steps onto the stage, representing our school with courage and grace. Our goal isn’t to chase medals, but to celebrate the art of dance and the joy it brings.
