Meet the Teachers: Miss Alyssa Brooke

Are you ready to meet the first new teacher to our 2025 faculty? Our fabulous Miss Alyssa has been part of our JOKSOD family since she was 4 years old and we are so thrilled to have her back with us.
Alyssa is JOKSOD alumni, graduating in 2024 and is now in the Scimm Dance pre-professional program working towards her Certificate IV in Dance! She is taking our brand new Wednesday pre-school class 'Ballet and Boogie' and is already a huge favourite with our new JOKSOD families.

1. Where and what age did you start dancing?
I started dancing at the age of 4 at Joanne O'Kelly School of Dance.
2. Tell us about your dance career and highlights
Throughout my 14 years of dancing at Joanne O'Kelly School of Dance I completed all Cecchetti Exams up to Advanced 2. After graduating from JOKSOD I attended full-time dance training with Scimm. Dance Pre-Professional to further my contemporary dance skills.
3. When did you know you wanted to become a dance teacher?
In 2019 I became a student helper, helping students from beginner through to pre-intermediate, this is when I knew I wanted to be a dance teacher when I grew up.
4. What’s your favourite style/genre of dance and why?
My favourite styles of dance are Contemporary and Neo. I love contemporary because of the creativeness and uniqueness in the steps, and I love Neo as I love expressing myself through dance while still maintaining more classical steps.
5. What do you love most about teaching?
The thing I love most about teaching is getting to see the joy on the kids faces when they are dancing.
6. What do you do when you’re not teaching at JOKSOD?
When I am not teaching at JOKSOD I thoroughly enjoy spending my time reading books.
7. What is your favourite day out?
My favourite day out is spending time with my family and friends.
8. Do you have any pets?
I have 2 pets, I have a dog called Bruce and I have a cat called Daisy.
9. What is your favourite time of year at JOKSOD and why?
It's hard to pick a favourite time of the year at JOKSOD, however I absolutely love meeting all the kids at the start of the year, and also the lead up to the end of year concert as it is such an exciting time!
10. Do you still take dance classes and where?
Occasionally I will join Alumni Jazz Class at JOKSOD when I can. I also take some classes at Scimm. With their Pre-Professional cohort.
11. What are you hopes and dreams for the future as a dance teacher?
As a dance teacher I hope to make a difference in the student's lives and have the ability to watch the kids grow up and express themselves through dance.
12. What do you love most about the JOKSOD community?
The thing I love most about the JOKSOD community is the friendships and the love shown towards each and every individual.
13. Where do you look for inspiration for choreography?
I look for choreography inspiration on social media and by attending professional shows.
14, What is your favourite theatre show?
My favourite theatre show is An American in Paris. I love this show as the story is mainly told through dance instead of dialogue.
15. If you were not a dance teacher what would you be doing instead?
If I was not a dance teacher I would be a forensic scientist as I love science.
